Porcelain Dolls By Evelyn            

Welcome to Evelyn's Doll House. Porcelain dolls and busts are a product of my love for them and 50+ years doing and teaching ceramics and doll making. I started with teaching ceramics in the 50's. In addition to teaching in my own studio, I taught structured classes for a major supplier of ceramic products.

I started making porcelain dolls and teaching classes in the 70's. We put a lot of love into making our porcelain dolls and often call them our babies. I can only hope that some of my love for them can be shared with those who purchase them.

Our creations start with plaster molds of the individual parts of the doll. Liquid slip is poured into the mold and after a period of time, the surplus slip is removed. When the slip in the mold dries to a leather like stage, the mold is opened and the greenware is removed. When the greenware is completely dry it is cleaned and high fired in a kiln. The kiln fires to 2,250 degrees F. When the greenware (now bisque) is cool, it is removed from the kiln and is polished in preparation for painting.

After the bisque has been china painted, it is placed in a kiln and re-fired at a lower temperature. When the kiln has cooled, the porcelain is removed from the kiln and is ready to be assembled. The choice of the clothing is a very individual preference. The "baby" is now ready to be adopted. As in most families, each "baby" is unique. At this time, I have only one "baby" or bust as shown. Some of the busts can be special ordered.
